When the first chapter's beta edits come in and you try not to cry/give up on writing altogether! It's harsh but the book wouldn't be perfect without honest critiques. It's definitely a process! :)

The Leavers is finally done and sent to my beta readers! Now to work on my next draft while waiting on their responses...
60,000 words into The Leavers! The last few scenes are left; probably another 10-20,000 words (I'm hoping) to wrap it up and I'm off to write the blurb, finish the cover, and send it off to beta readers!
Still working on The Leavers editing. I've gone through and noted every scene, and where more scenes need to be added--so now I get to write the in-between stuff, the bits between the pivotal scenes to flesh it out a bit more!
So far I've gotten the book to 58,000 words long; adding about 500 words per day. Should start being even more as I get a little less busy than I have been lately! Most of the first part of the book is coherent, but as usual, I lose the plot at the end, so I'm working from chapter 8 (and it ends at chapter 10 so far) onwards. Leavers editing is finally done! I've found a lot of scenes--particularly near the end, where my plotting does tend to fall apart--that need to be fixed or added, so onto that next!
My other WIP is still just around 5k words, but the idea is developing slowly. It's going to be a very interesting one, I think! More sci fi than anything. The Leavers and its editing process is, right now, this: I printed it out and have been going through the first step of the editing process--reading through the entire book, and putting out each major scene on a note. This way, I've already found some continuity errors and plot holes, and places where scenes are missing or would be better in a different order!
I'm only up to chapter 3, but I can't wait to finish. In the meantime, I'm also working on the next novel's first draft. This one is another science fiction, a pretty odd one--there's alternate dimensions, alien worlds, and a man who may or may not be dead. Thanks Lynda for sending this book--it was a pleasure to beta read and an awesome series! So cool to see it in print.

This one is a science fiction again--since I have mostly fantasy and only one sci fi, but also because that was the clearest idea outlined in my word document I keep full of ideas and anything that inspires me!
It's currently at 3k words, and I'm doing approximately 200 words per day--not much, I know, but the beginning is the slowest, as I'm 'pantsing' it (ie doing it by the seat of my pants, without planning) so I really don't know where it's going as I write it! I've finally found the end of The Leavers! At 56,000 words, it's my usual length--short of my goal--but still quite a decent-sized novel. I don't want to force the story to be longer than it should be, and it very much felt like it was wrapping up.
Now to shelve it for a month--if I can be patient that long!--before a few final edits, then publication!!! So excited to add my 5th book to Amazon. |
