Still working on The Leavers editing. I've gone through and noted every scene, and where more scenes need to be added--so now I get to write the in-between stuff, the bits between the pivotal scenes to flesh it out a bit more!
So far I've gotten the book to 58,000 words long; adding about 500 words per day. Should start being even more as I get a little less busy than I have been lately!
Most of the first part of the book is coherent, but as usual, I lose the plot at the end, so I'm working from chapter 8 (and it ends at chapter 10 so far) onwards.
Leavers editing is finally done! I've found a lot of scenes--particularly near the end, where my plotting does tend to fall apart--that need to be fixed or added, so onto that next!
My other WIP is still just around 5k words, but the idea is developing slowly. It's going to be a very interesting one, I think! More sci fi than anything.
The Leavers and its editing process is, right now, this:
I printed it out and have been going through the first step of the editing process--reading through the entire book, and putting out each major scene on a note. This way, I've already found some continuity errors and plot holes, and places where scenes are missing or would be better in a different order!
I'm only up to chapter 3, but I can't wait to finish.
In the meantime, I'm also working on the next novel's first draft. This one is another science fiction, a pretty odd one--there's alternate dimensions, alien worlds, and a man who may or may not be dead.
Thanks Lynda for sending this book--it was a pleasure to beta read and an awesome series! So cool to see it in print.
While waiting on The Leavers to sit for a while, to get a fresh perspective on it before embarking on the final edits/adding more to the word count/finally publishing, I've started a new WIP. This one is a science fiction again--since I have mostly fantasy and only one sci fi, but also because that was the clearest idea outlined in my word document I keep full of ideas and anything that inspires me!
It's currently at 3k words, and I'm doing approximately 200 words per day--not much, I know, but the beginning is the slowest, as I'm 'pantsing' it (ie doing it by the seat of my pants, without planning) so I really don't know where it's going as I write it!
I've finally found the end of The Leavers! At 56,000 words, it's my usual length--short of my goal--but still quite a decent-sized novel. I don't want to force the story to be longer than it should be, and it very much felt like it was wrapping up.
Now to shelve it for a month--if I can be patient that long!--before a few final edits, then publication!!! So excited to add my 5th book to Amazon.
After finishing editing The Leavers, I reached a total of 50,000 words. Pretty impressive, yes, but terribly short for a fantasy novel--and especially for my goal of at LEAST 80,000 words (a decent-length book).
So after brainstorming where I could go from there, since the plot could have been wrapped up in those 50k, I came up with a new direction for the story and hopefully a much more exciting ending; taking what the character learned to overcome in the first part of the novel, and creating a situation where they can apply this to the newer, much more difficult problem with much higher stakes!
With that inspiration I wrote a little over 3,000 words yesterday!! More than I have in quite a while, since I've been stuck on where to go for ages. If I do 3,000 per day, I'll reach my goal of an additional 30,000 in 10 days!

First round of edits on The Leavers is done! Now to the hard part--adding more to the story, fleshing out the scenes where I just put in notes to do later. This is the part that should make the story go from a bit over 50k words to my goal of around 80k, if I'm not impatient about it!
